As a diasporic people, we are inherently settlers in someone else’s indigenous homeland. The lands on which we live today were made available to us through violent European settler colonization and theft from its indigenous inhabitants. We must reconcile with that.
Translating to “righteousness,” Tzedakah represents our ethical obligation to do what’s right and pursue justice. Tzedakah is a familiar concept to many who grew up in Jewish institutions and put money in a tzedakah box each week, representing the 10% of our earnings that the Torah commands us to give to those in need.
It is our obligation to push back against the ongoing violence of settler colonialism and advocate for the return of land and stewardship to those who have been tending it sustainably for thousands of years. Denver Doikayt is committed to supporting the indigenous-led Land Back Movement. We do this through direct partnerships with indigenous-led organizations, volunteering, and reparations via monetary and material support for Land Back efforts.
Many people in our community want to participate in wealth redistribution and reparations, but don’t know where or how to start. In the absence of systematic local, state, and national efforts to repair our relationships with the land and indigenous people, Denver Doikayt has developed a funding model to maintain ongoing financial support for Land Back.
We collect monthly and one time contributions and redistribute 75% of those funds directly to Indigenous partners – either on a bi-annual basis or as needed for specific Indigenous-led projects. To date, we have donated nearly $14,000 over four years and our own volunteer time to the following organizations:
Harvest of All First Nations
Right Relationship Boulder
Spirit of the Sun
Womxn from the Mountain
Tiyospaye
The remaining 25% supports Doikayt’s community programming, learning opportunities, and ritual — which are open to all. Our programming allows us, as diasporic Jews, to foster our own holy connections with each other and the sacred ground on which we stand.
We invite Jews (and allies!) in our Greater Denver Diaspora to contribute monthly to our Indigenous Reparations Fund, which we will redistribute to our Indigenous partners. Donate now
