What even is Lag B'omer???
Lag B'omer has various potential origins, including the ending of a plague that struck Rabbi Akiva's disciples and the yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai (Rashbi), who, per kabbalistic tradition, is attributed with writing the foundational kabbalistic text, the Zohar. Jews have traditionally marked this day (technically May 5 this year) with bonfires. At the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, many believe the bonfire tradition overlaps with other European festivals that welcome summer (and labor rights!) with celebratory bonfires, such as May Day and Beltane.
Counting the Omer
Lag B'omer falls on the 33rd day of the counting of the omer. Counting the omer commemorates the journey between jewish liberation and revelation by counting the days between the 2nd night of passover and shavuot and reflecting on various combinations (49 total) of the sefirot in the tree of life. For those who are interested in diving into this reflective practice, check out Dreaming the World to Come's guide to Counting the Omer.
This event will take place in Aurora near Colfax and Dayton. We will share the address with registered attendees before the event.
